Students begin this project by selecting an image with an interesting composition and a distinctive value scheme. From the original image, students do a series of compositional studies and create a tracing of the original image with a grid.
Using construction paper, students create a geometric compositional study of the original image.
From the smaller grid, students create an enlarged grid by hand maintaining the proportions of the original image.
From the enlarged grid, students were then directed to create a line drawing of the enlarged composition using a rapidograph pen.
The final value study was created, at the enlarged size, using acrylic paint.

The final value studies are created at the enlarged size using acrylic paint (left), rapidograph pen (middle) and cut and paste collage (right). The challenge of this project is to render the value scheme of the original image effectively in a variety of media using a variety of techniques.
