Students begin this project by selecting a black and white image with an interesting content. Students are then directed to disregard the informational qualities of the content and deconstruct the original image by cutting it into smaller geometric sections. The students then re-assemble the pieces to create an abstract design.
After abstracting the original image, students are then directed to create a value study of the abstraction using watercolor paint. As a technical challenge, students must be sensitive to and show off the capabilities of the media as a way of further abstracting the image. From the value study, students may then continue the abstraction by applying color to the image.
